Theme

Building Connections and Interdisciplinary Pathways for Impactful Research

Vision

The Animals, Nature and Society PhD Workshop aims to provide a platform for PhD students from a range of disciplines within the arts, humanities, and social sciences to collaborate, network, present research and receive feedback within an interdisciplinary space. The workshop will welcome research that touches upon or intersects with issues relating to animals, nature, and society (broadly conceived). The workshop is broad in its scope in order to engage doctoral researchers in a cross-disciplinary session with the goal of showcasing research with the potential for impact on animal, environmental, and social issues through any mechanism within the arts, humanities and social sciences (such as education, law and policy, social movements). This theme aims to spark critical conversations about the interconnectedness of human and non-human issues and foster innovative approaches to solving them.

Prior to the UK Animal Law Conference on June 4-5, 2025, the workshop is scheduled for June 3, 2025, as a prelude to the two-day conference. The core aim is to provide an interdisciplinary platform for PhD students across the arts, humanities and social sciences with research relating to animals and/or the environment to present their work, engage in critical discussions with more senior academics and network with peers. Supported by Midlands4Cities through the Cohort Development Fund, the workshop is designed to foster collaboration, enhance research communication skills and promote interdisciplinary dialogue.
