About the event

About

Join us for an engaging discussion with Dr Tongue, a scholar in abortion and reproductive rights, feminist legal theory, international human rights law, animal rights, and science fiction from the University of Leeds. Underpinned by feminist legal theory, Dr Tongue’s research explores creative approaches for achieving progress regarding human and animal social justice, with her PhD focusing on the recognition of a human right to abortion in the international framework, underpinned by a feminist approach to moral philosophy. Drawing on her extensive research regarding abortion and reproductive rights, feminist legal theory, and social justice movements, Dr Tongue will explore how a decolonial feminist approach can offer an alternative framework to the traditional approach of animal law that can better protect animals.

Speaker

Dr Zoe Tongue is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Leeds. Dr Tongue’s areas of expertise lie in abortion, reproductive rights, international human rights, healthcare law and bioethics, feminist legal theory, science fiction, and animal rights. Tongue has made significant contributions to the academic discourse surrounding abortion and reproductive rights in an international context and the role of social justice movements in advancing social change, particularly their place in helping to achieve abortion law reform. Some of Dr Tongue’s current ongoing work looks at creative and non-traditional approaches to feminist legal research, including through art and science fiction creative writing. Tongue participated in the Leeds Creative Labs programme in 2023 and was awarded follow-on funding to continue the Creative Labs partnership with an exhibition and workshop exploring reproductive health through visual art, taking place at East Street Arts in July 2024.
